Miguel Simard

Miguel Simard is Assistant General Counsel at Export Development Canada (EDC), where he leads the Finance and Capital Markets practice of the Legal Division.

Miguel’s team of 12 lawyers and 3 law clerks specializes in corporate finance, project finance, aviation finance, financial restructurings, private equity and issuance of debt securities in international capital markets. Miguel has extensive experience in these areas coupled with regulatory, compliance and trade law matters associated with the activities of an export credit agency (including World Trade Organization (WTO) law, foreign corrupt practices, money laundering, sanctions, insider trading, export controls and human rights at Canadian and international law). He also has wide experience with the legal regime governing Crown corporations.

He first qualified as a lawyer in the province of Quebec in 1994. He then worked in Montreal in the banking department of a major law firm, Fasken Martineau. Miguel joined EDC in 1998 and became Senior Legal Counsel in 2004. He qualified as a barrister and solicitor in the province of Ontario in 2009. He was appointed Assistant General Counsel in August 2009 and has led the Insurance practice and the Finance and Capital Markets practice at different times during that period. He is fluent in French and English.

Over the years, Miguel has played an active role in various corporate committees and projects, including co-leading a Tier 1 project focused on various internal advisory services at EDC (Corporate Responsibility, Environment, Political Risk, Legal etc.), including the definition of reputational, compliance and business risks. He has presented at different conferences.

EDC is Canada’s export credit agency, providing financing and insurance solutions locally and around the world to help Canadian companies of any size respond to international business opportunities. As a profitable Crown corporation that operates on commercial principles, EDC works together with private and public sector financial institutions to create greater capacity for Canadian companies to engage in trade and investment.
